that the NCR remains very competitive
across the public and private sector labour
markets.
“They’re competing oftentimes for
similar types of people and similar types
of roles,” Leung says.
That’s certainly true for Syntronic R&D
Canada, an engineering design house
specializing in advanced product and
systems development, production and
aftermarket services. The company
recognizes that the disruption to the
public sector presents hiring opportunities. The company intentionally combines
the strengths of both sectors in its
workforce, rather than treating them as
competing models.
“Many federal employees have spent
years working within large, complex
systems with long planning horizons, strict
governance requirements and multiple
stakeholders,” says Ben Morris, senior
vice-president and head of Syntronic R&D
Canada.
“That kind of experience is directly
relevant to private sector companies like
Syntronic that operate in highly regulated
markets,” adds Morris, saying the
knowledge public sector workers have of
how complex systems run over time is very
beneficial.
The company also recognizes that
flexibility, meaningful work and long-term
career growth matter just as much as
compensation. Although private companies may not replicate public sector
pension models, Morris says that many are
investing more intentionally in hybrid
work, where it fits, plus skills development
and stable career paths.
While NCR Top Employers monitor
major employment trends in the face of a
disruptive employment climate, many are
also expanding traditional health and
wellness benefits across the board, in part
to promote greater stability amid that
disruption.
“They’ve either increased coverage
amounts for standard benefits, or they’re
increasing their spending accounts for
more flexibility,” Leung says. She highlights the introduction of more wellness
and social programming in areas such as
mental health as Top Employers try to
“create a culture of well-being to build
confidence in this uncertain climate.”

personal development with generous tuition
