BC’S TOP EMPLOYERS (2026)
A culture of caring energizes Teck employees
S
amim Mokhtar was
raised a city boy in
Vancouver, studying at
the University of British
Columbia amidst an
urban landscape. But when he
finished his internship at Teck
Resources Limited smelter
operations in Trail, he fell in love
with the area and his job. Today,
he’s happy to call the Kootenays
home.
“I can’t find any reason to leave
anytime soon, and that’s me
having grown up in Vancouver —
I don’t see myself going back to the
city,” says Mokhtar.
It’s an exciting space
to be in. If you want to
be part of the energy
transition and part of
a company that cares
about people as we
care about the work
we do, then this is the
place you can do that.

“I have a job that keeps me
engaged and challenged, I work
with very smart people, and my
commute is only 15 minutes. The
Kootenays are beautiful, and with
the combination of a great job and
a great region, I don’t have any
reason to go back.”

copper and zinc operations across
North and South America and has
announced a proposed merger
with U.K.-based Anglo American
to form the new Anglo Teck
company with its headquarters in
Vancouver.
Mokhtar is happy with his
role as a process engineer at the
company’s Trail Operations and
is excited about the opportunities
the proposed merger may bring.
The Trail Operation is a unique
facility and his contribution to the
site’s success is a significant part of
what he enjoys about his job.
“It’s a unique process we
manage. When I go to work, I’m
excited because you’re trying to
solve a puzzle every day with your
co-workers and then move on to
the next challenge,” he says.
“As an engineer, that technical
challenge appeals to me.
Additionally, I work with a great
team that supports me. It’s challenging but you’d be hard pressed
to find another place that can
offer the same level of industry
excellence in Canada.”
The challenging work is made
easier for Mokhtar and his fellow
employees by Teck’s commitment
to creating work-life balance and
offering opportunities to unwind
once they’re out the door. Mokhtar
makes use of Teck’s flexible work
schedule options and participates
in various programs to enjoy
the surrounding area, including
ultimate frisbee, mountain biking
and hiking.
Making sure employees are at
their best mentally and physically
is foundational to the holistic
approach Teck takes in supporting
employees, says Andrea Leroux,
vice-president, transformation. It
creates a high-energy atmosphere
in which employees thrive,
she says.
