B
ritish Columbia’s government is predicting
the province will add over one million jobs
in the next decade. Though government
funding for in-demand job training has been
announced, many employers are challenging
convention by shifting to skills-based hiring and
robust in-house training to address the province’s
widening skills gap.
BC’s Top Employers are at the forefront of this
transition. Shifting demographics and talent
shortages have resulted in the push for more
innovative programs and professional development
opportunities, especially those that reach nontraditional talent pools. The ongoing development of
these programs will need to be prioritized by
employers looking to attract and retain employees,
and prepare them for future opportunities, in an
evolving landscape.
Any employer, private- or public-sector, with its head
office or principal place of business in British
Columbia may apply for BC’s Top Employers.
To determine competition winners, employers are
compared to organizations in similar industries and
of similar size. Employers are evaluated on eight
selection criteria, which are: (1) Workplace; (2) Work
Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family
Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee
Communications; (6) Performance Management;
(7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community
Involvement.
While the underlying criteria have remained
consistent since the project’s inception, areas of
review have expanded and evolved with the advent
of new programs and policies. Examples include
hybrid and remote work options, health and wellness
benefits, and training and development
opportunities.
Now in its 21st edition, BC’s Top Employers continue
to raise the bar for progressive workplaces. Detailed
