Meridian Surveys helps map its employees’ success

working at Meridian
Surveys 30 years ago as
an entry-level survey
assistant when he
was still in university. The fact
that he is now president of the
Saskatoon-based provider of
surveying services for pipelines,
construction, oil and gas and
other sectors is a testament to
the company’s major focus on
supporting its employees.
“It’s a people-first culture here.
We don’t just put that in words,
we actually implement it,” says
Andersen, who worked his way
up from assistant to junior crew
chief, then became a certified
Saskatchewan land surveyor,
a branch manager and finally
president of the company. It now
has 11 offices across Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and Alberta and
will celebrate its 60th anniversary
this year.

President
Robbie Stark, a crew chief who’s
been with Meridian since 2016,
echoes that people-first sentiment.

with career guidance as well as
financial assistance.
“I went to the British Columbia
Institute of Technology in
Vancouver, and Meridian helped
me with tuition and books and
everything,” he says. “In the
summers, I’d come back to work
for them, and when I was done,
they asked me which office I
wanted to work at. I chose Prince
Albert because that’s where my
family is, so it ended up working
out nicely.”
Employees have an annual
performance review with their
manager in which they’re given
advice and career development
options. “They’re asked if they’re
happy where they are or if they
want to take further education or
programs to move up the ladder,”
says Andersen. “And we have
scholarships available for those
who do.”
Meridian also has programs
to build workplace diversity, for
which it was awarded the NSBA
Business Builders’ Indigenous
Inclusion Award, and holds an
event called Meridian Annually
Promoting Success (MAPS).
“We shut down for a day every
year and get together to talk
about best practices,” Andersen
says. “We get great feedback
about that.”
The company’s leadership also
gets together annually to review
all its policies and make sure
they’re current and relevant.
“We’re always making changes,”
