A culture that prizes connection is key at Kinross
M
aria Rodmell has
been working
at Kinross Gold
Corporation for
15 years, a not
unusual length of time for the
Toronto-based mining company,
where many employees enjoy
decades-long careers. She credits
the culture at Kinross for that
longevity.
One of our values is
putting people first.
Other places may say
that, but you really feel
it here.

Human Resources Manager
“The average tenure is approximately five years and it’s because
of the culture,” says Rodmell,
who is now vice-president of
human resources operations at
Kinross. “It’s very warm, friendly
and flexible, and I’ve been given a
lot of opportunities for
advancement.”
Kinross offers a range of leadership and mentorship programs
to train and retain employees,
including a Women at Kinross
program to encourage female
representation in the traditionally
male-dominated mining industry,
the Generation Gold program to
bring in new graduates, and SLII,
which helps potential leaders
learn to work with different types
of employees.

has been able to participate in
several career development
programs, including SLII.
“It trains managers on how to
adapt their leadership style to the
needs of the individuals on their
team, and I was able to participate
in that,” she says. “We also have a
buddy program for onboarding
which helps new employees get to
know the Kinross culture. It’s
somebody who’s not on their
team so it connects them to
people outside their department
as well, which is helpful.”
There’s also a generous maternity leave policy that tops up an
employee’s salary for six months, a
policy that encourages new fathers
to also take their paternity leave,
and an innovative program for
new mothers returning to work
after their maternity leave.
“Some of our returning mothers
find it quite hard to come back
after 18 months away,” says
Rodmell. “We’re developing a
program that matches returning
moms with another mother
who has recently returned after
maternity leave so they have
someone who’s had a similar experience to talk to and help them
navigate through the transition.”
Both Rodmell and Moran
cite the employee engagement
events and connections fostered
by Kinross through its social
committee.
“There are various social events
that happen through the year
like a holiday lunch, a Canada
Day barbecue and an ice cream
cart that they bring around in the
summer,” Moran says. “And there’s
