It’s a family vibe at Smith Bros. & Wilson
F
or Logan Huard, every
day working at Smith
Bros. & Wilson is like a
day in paradise — well,
Paradise Hill, the small
Saskatchewan town he grew up in.
“Smith Bros. & Wilson has
a small-town community vibe
where you know all your coworkers working on different
projects and they’re kind of like
your neighbours,” says Huard.
“You know what they’re getting
up to, you know their family, their
friends. It’s always a positive vibe
around here.
“It’s one small community, so
when the opportunity to work for
them came up, I said, ‘This is the
place for me.’”
Smith Bros. & Wilson is
headquartered in Surrey, B.C.
It may be a small construction
company but its 127 employees
build big things that make a
difference in people’s lives, like
the Marpole Transit Centre
in Vancouver, the Seaspan
Groundwater Treatment Plant in
North Vancouver and the Peace
Arch Hospital Expansion Project
in suburban White Rock, B.C.
The company is also extending
the passenger platforms in every
SkyTrain station to accommodate
the new, longer trains purchased
by TransLink (the regional transit
system).
For Huard, a project manager,
the chance to build meaningful
public infrastructure was a key
factor in his decision to join Smith
Bros. & Wilson and what keeps
him there.
“When we completed the Peace
Arch Hospital Expansion, it was
extremely rewarding because at
the time, my father was actually
quite sick and it was the height of
COVID,” he says.
“As they cut the ribbon, I
realized that what we’re doing is
building facilities that will help
our friends and our families.
That’s the nice thing about this
job and sets Smith Bros. & Wilson
apart from other construction
companies. We’re not just
building buildings. We build
essential infrastructure for
our communities.”
It’s that sense of pride and
shared mission that helps Smith
Bros. & Wilson attract and
retain top talent from across the
country. The close community
feel is helped by an employee-first
support network, says company
president and co-CEO Jeff
Musialek.
We have the best
employees. I’m so
proud of our people
because of what they
do, and that’s why the
company values them
so much.

“I know 99 per cent of the
individuals in our company
directly and personally,” he says.
“The leadership before me acted
the same way, and we just remain
approachable and employee
oriented.
“We try to encourage people
to be part of the family and stay
with the family. That’s been the
best recruiting tool of all. We have
had no problem recruiting new
talented people and retaining
them.”
Another key to Smith Bros.
& Wilson’s success is its
commitment to keeping its
employees up to date with the
latest skills training and academic
support. The company offers
up to $10,000 a year in tuition
subsidies. That’s vitally important
in the new age of construction
where you need more than just a
