Hybrid work leads to high performance at Mawer

remotely until her daughter was
old enough to go to school — a
setup that has had a profound
impact on Letendre.
“The flexible work policy
has been life changing for me,”
says the institutional marketing
specialist and mother of two.
“I’m still able to be here for my
family, but also able to grow
professionally.”
Letendre is part of Mawer’s
Calgary office, but the investment
firm also has locations in Toronto
and Singapore, along with a
handful of workers throughout
the United States. So, building
employee culture across time
zones is something the privately
owned firm has come to excel at.
Remote work at Mawer is more
of a philosophy rather than a firm
policy, explains head of human
resources Audra Campbell, who
joined the team eight years ago to
be at a company where she felt she
could make a difference.
From implementing remote
work technology to in-person
annual gatherings, community
giving days and a leadership
development program, the ways
that Mawer supports remote work
has evolved dynamically over time
to meet the needs of its staff.
“We continue to try new things,
and we don’t stay stuck in any one
area,” says Campbell. “The key
is being really intentional about
why we’re connecting, how we’re
connecting and what we’re
doing.”
Most importantly, leadership
trusts staff to choose how and
where they work while meeting
client and team needs. The result
is a 250-person strong, flourishing
global team working in a hybrid
capacity from home and office
across multiple time zones.
“If you’re able to optimize
hybrid, it’s a competitive
advantage,” says Campbell. “You
get happier employees that are
able to thrive in everything they
do.”

Employees at Mawer Investment Management give back to the community by volunteering with Habitat for
Humanity.
Supporting performancefocused teams requires a
foundation of trust and
accountability, Campbell says.
“That’s what drives autonomy
and allows for free-thinking,”
she says. “Our employees want
the firm to grow. They want the
firm to be successful, but they
also care about each other and
how that work gets done. It’s a
high-performing culture, but not
at the expense of well-being and
collaboration.”
That’s been the case for
Letendre, who has had the
benefits of remote work ripple
out into all aspects of her career
— from greater productivity to
deeper connections with her
global teammates.
“I feel like I’m constantly
learning from my colleagues
around the world, their different
backgrounds and perspectives,”
