the community yearly and support over
350 organizations,” says Liz Stretch,
Vancity’s interim chief people officer. “We
also recently joined the Partnership
Accreditation in Indigenous Relations to
reinforce our commitment to prosperity in
Indigenous communities.”
Crystal Alseth, HR business partner at
first-time Top Employers winner Emil
Anderson Group, points out that
attributes such as good communication go
a long way in making workers feel valued.
“Here, everyone has a name, and
management is focused on knowing its
employees,” she says of the company that
specializes in construction, maintenance
and infrastructure services. “Site visits and
events also help foster strong
relationships.”
In a similar vein, John D’Agnolo,
executive director of human resources at
Victoria’s Camosun College, also a
first-time Top Employers winner, says
respect for employees goes a long way.
Camosun’s employee-friendly policies
include benefits that begin immediately,
child-care facilities and summer camp
discounts.
“Our work environment is grounded in
trust and respect, with open and honest
communication being a key to achieving
this,” says D’Agnolo, adding that the Top
Employers honour “validates what we
have long felt about our institution, and is
a great honour.”
The sentiment also applies to repeat
winners such as Vancity.
“Continuing to earn the designation
means we’re effective in evolving our
policies,” Stretch says. “In short, the thrill
of winning is undiminished.”
