Shaping the future of accounting at Crowe Soberman
W

Ly-Quach
joined Crowe
Soberman LLP
as a junior staff
accountant in October 2022, he
immediately felt accepted.
“The environment was very
welcoming,” says Ly-Quach, now
a senior staff accountant. “A lot
of people reached out to me so
I never felt lost, even in the first
week.”
That kind of support would
prove critical as Ly-Quach
pursued his chartered professional
accountant (CPA) designation
with the firm’s comprehensive
assistance. The CPA common final
examination (CFE) is a gruelling
three-day exam that is the final
step in the CPA certification
program. Besides reimbursing all
related costs, Crowe Soberman
matches every student with a
dedicated mentor who guides
them throughout their entire
preparation journey.

“It’s very stressful, certainly the
biggest test I’ve ever written, but
having a CFE mentor that I could
just reach on the phone was really
helpful,” says Ly-Quach. “My
mentor helped with marking my
cases, answering any questions
I had and just comforting me
during the whole two-and-ahalf-month break I had over the
summer for studying.
“I was also paired with two other
writers who worked at the firm,
and we studied together in person.
We’re still close friends to this
day.”
Lauren Becker, director of
professional development, says
the exam is really unlike anything
the students have faced before, so
it’s important to have the support
of someone who’s already been
through it. That includes advice
on how to manage their own
personal life, whether that’s doing
a workout, seeing friends and
family, or simply going for a walk.
“You need to live your regular
life so that you can focus on other
things, aside from the exam,”
says Becker. “We also take all the
guesswork out of studying. Each
student gets a detailed day-by-day
study schedule, as well as our
proven specific study method that
tells them exactly what to focus
on.
“We really equip our students
with everything they need to
succeed,” she says. “We give them
comprehensive resources, but
also very individualized support,
and I think that makes all the
difference.”
Post-exam, the mentorship
continues, with advisors offering
ongoing career advice and dayto-day support that goes beyond
typical check-ins. The firm also
provides continuous professional
development training on topics
such as tax returns, financial
statements and new accounting
standards.
