With a strong mix of public and private
sector employment opportunities, the
National Capital Region (NCR) represents
a remarkably stable labour market.
However, behind the scenes employers
continue to sharpen their offers to attract
and retain workers.
“Employers in the region are the
standard bearers of traditional benefits,
including defined benefit pensions, health
coverage that extends to retirees and a full
year of top-up for birth mothers,” says
Kristina Leung, managing editor for
Canada’s Top 100 Employers. “They also
represent some of the most progressive
and innovative employers. For example,
federal government departments have
considerably increased their mental
health coverage from $2,000 to $5,000
annually, so they’re really setting a
standard in the NCR.”
On the other hand, private sector
offerings are also setting a standard for
benefits.
“We see more uncapped vacation or
flexible time-off policies, which generally
start in the private sector, particularly in
the tech sector,” says Richard Yerema,
executive editor at Canada’s Top 100
Employers. “We also now see a higher
uptake of maternity leave top-up and
parental leave programs in the private
sector, so cross-pollination has been a big
part of the story.”
