Top organizations in 20-year-old competition meet the changing needs of employees

nflation has taken its toll, and labour
shortages remain chronic, but the
winners of the BC’s Top Employers
(2025) competition exhibit a strong
can-do vibe.
The BC’s Top Employers competition is
organized by the editors of the Canada’s
Top 100 Employers project. Winners for
both competitions are judged on criteria
including: (1) Workplace; (2) Work
Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial
& Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time
Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6)
Performance Management; (7) Training &
Skills Development; and (8) Community
Involvement.
Since the launch of the Canada’s Top
100 Employers project 25 years ago, and
the B.C. competition 20 years ago, there
has been a steady evolution in the workplace. The policies that make a company a
Top Employer have changed, too.
“We look at the introduction of benefit
programs such as maternity leave top-up,
and moving into universal top-up
payments for all types of parents; these
types of programs continue to evolve,” says
Richard Yerema, executive editor at
Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
Kristina Leung, managing editor at
Canada’s Top 100 Employers, adds that the
expectations of workers have changed as
well, including younger employees from
generations Z and Alpha.
“They expect employers to be a little bit
more in touch with their own values, so
having community programs like outreach
into the community or opportunities to
give back is important.”
A good example is Vancouver City
Savings Credit Union, or Vancity, a BC’s
Top Employers winner in 2025 and many
other years since 2004.
