For Gibson, living its values ties everything together

Calgary-based
Gibson Energy
Inc. as its new
president and
CEO in 2024, Curtis Philippon had
high expectations for the midstream oil and gas distributor, and
his new colleagues more than met
them. “At 500 people, we’re a great
size, large enough that we can do
big things as a company and small
enough that whether I’m sitting in
Calgary or in Texas at our Corpus
Christi terminal, we all generally
know each other’s names,” says
Philippon.
“But an even bigger difference
maker for us, one we’re really
proud of, is that at Gibson, we
have an ownership mentality that
is supported by a strong employee
share purchase program — over
95% of our employees have
ownership in the company,”
Philippon says. “Because of that,
our people feel like they’re all not
just working together but have
a shared interest in the success
of the organization, and that
drives a whole different level
of performance. I knew all that
coming in, but to see it firsthand
has been wonderful.”
And Gibson is always striving
to do better by its employees, says
Alena Foster, senior sustainability
analyst. “Every year, you can see
us improve across the board, from
increasing maternal and parental
benefits to working with our
Indigenous relations team on an
Indigenous Peoples development
program, and urging employees to
take volunteer time,” Foster says.
“I am on a board for Canadian
Women in Energy and spend a
lot of time outside of the office
volunteering, and Gibson gives me
paid time off for that,” she says.
“I think that really speaks to the
values that the company has and
lives by.”
Those same values are reflected
throughout Gibson’s operations,
Foster adds. “Sustainability is
a core value for Gibson and a
defining part of who we are.
Even as the broader sentiment
around sustainability changes and
some companies scale back their
commitments or disclosures, we
remain confident in our direction
and our aspirations. I think that
really reflects our commitment
to doing what’s right and
demonstrates Gibson’s culture of
integrity and accountability.”
We have an ownership
mentality here where
our people feel like
they’re all not just
working together but
owners in the company,
and that drives a
whole different level of
performance.

Employees at Gibson Energy are dedicated to keeping all of the company’s operations safe, reliable, and
efficient.
Every part of Gibson goes “hand
in hand” with every other part,
Philippon says. “We can see the
changing environment around
us regarding diversity, equity and
inclusion measures, but it makes
no difference to us — it’s still
the right thing to do. We are still
leaning hard into diversity, as well
as into a significant push to ramp
up the number of Indigenous
suppliers that we could work more
closely with. We want to further
develop those supply chains, and
we have some specific targets for
increasing our spending with
those groups.”
Similarly — after Gibson
acquired the South Texas Gateway
Terminal in Corpus Christi — the
company expanded parental leave
benefits there well beyond the
