ollowers of our Atlantic Canada’s Top Employers
competition will not be surprised to learn that
our 2025 list – announced today – was the most
competitive since the competition began 16 years
ago. As in past years, employers in all four
Atlantic provinces are competing with their peers across
the region to attract the best and brightest with workplace
benefits and forward-thinking human resource policies.
This year, however, Atlantic Canada employers are looking further afield, paying close attention to what their peer
organizations across the country are offering to attract
talented employees. Nationally competitive benefits like
strong maternity and parental leave top, as well as mental
health support, are increasingly common across Atlantic
Canada’s Top Employers.
During the pandemic, the population of Atlantic
Canada soared as many people moved to the region from
across Canada and abroad, attracted by its affordable cost
of living, quality of life and (in some cases) the ability to
work remotely. As population growth in the region begins
to moderate, employers in Atlantic Canada are anxious to
keep the employees they’ve recruited – and don’t want to
lose them to employers elsewhere in Canada.
Providing employees with more time to balance work
and family commitments is a key area where this year’s
Atlantic winners excel. Alcool NB Liquor and WCB Nova
Scotia both provide staff with four paid days off annually
to recharge. Dartmouth-based Fleetway provides seven
paid personal days each year. Or take CAA Atlantic in
Saint John, which provides employees with compassionate
leave top-up pay (to 80 per cent of salary for 15 weeks) if
they are called upon to care for a loved one.
The focus on additional time off can also be seen in
improved vacation allowances at this year’s winners.
Dartmouth-based Nature’s Way Products starts all new
employees with four weeks of paid annual vacation
allowance. From June to August, Office Interiors provides
its staff the opportunity to leave work 30 minutes early to
enjoy the warm summer months.
This year’s winners are also ahead of the national trend
to provide family friendly benefits in a more inclusive
manner. Halifax engineering firm CBCL introduced
parental leave top-up pay for fathers and adoptive parents
in the past year. And despite being in an exceptionally
competitive industry, High Liner Foods, in Bayport, N.S.,
provides maternity leave top-up pay and parental leave
top-up for fathers and adoptive parents.
This year’s winners are also paying close attention to
hybrid work. St. John’s-based Nasdaq Verafin offers a
formal ‘work from anywhere’ program that lets employees
arrange to work off-site up to four weeks annually.
Making it easier for employees to give back to the
community is another way that this year’s Atlantic Canada
winners stay ahead of competitors. At Clearwater
Seafoods and Killam Apartments REIT, employees
receive three paid days each year to volunteer at local
charities. At Emera Inc., the company provides matching
donations to local charities in proportion to the number of
hours their employees volunteer.
