educational leave of up to 52 weeks.
T
his year marks the 20th anniversary of the
Alberta’s Top Employers competition, which
we have been publishing with the Calgary
Herald and Edmonton Journal since its
inception. The competition recognizes the
employers that lead the province in creating forward-thinking human resources programs and better
workplaces for all their employees. Each year, our editors
sift through mountains of data to determine which
Alberta employers represent the very best the province
has to offer.
For long-time readers, the list of Alberta winners
announced in today’s magazine comes with more than a
small sense of pride. The province leads the nation both
in terms of population growth and in economic terms,
with the highest GDP per capita at $72,530 per year. So it’s
natural that Alberta employers are also leaders in the
benefits and policies that are important to employees.
Among the most important is vacation allowance and
personal time-off: Alberta employers lead the nation in
giving employees more time off to spend with their
family and friends. Take Calgary-based oil and gas
producer TAQA North, which starts all its new employees with four weeks paid vacation allowance per year. Or
Calgary’s Bow Valley College, which provides staff with
an exceptional 11 paid personal days off each year – in
addition to vacation allowance – that employees can
schedule as needed.
Many of this year’s winners go out of their way to help
employees to give back to their local communities.
Pembina Pipeline Corp. sets a high bar, matching
employee donations to charities to a remarkable limit of
$10,000 per year. Over at Keyera Corp., the energy firm’s
1,129 employees last year donated a very impressive 8,900
volunteer hours on company time to local charities. And
in Calgary, Convergint Technologies closes for a day
every summer to give each of its 783 employees a paid day
off to volunteer with local charities.
Alberta employers also excel when it comes to
family-friendly benefits for staff. Gibson Energy
provides a generous Family Building benefit, which
offers employees up to $30,000 to cover costs related to
fertility treatments, adoption and surrogacy. Calgary-based national law firm Dentons LLP, helps
employees with generous maternity and parental leave
top-up — and provides staff with IVF or adoption
assistance up to $15,000, if needed. Another Alberta
winner, Strathcona County, helps employees who need
time off to care for a family member by providing
compassionate leave top up to 100% of salary for up to
four weeks.
This year’s winners also put time and effort into
creating opportunities for employees to build social
connections with colleagues at work. Calgary-based
Enbridge offers a busy social calendar that helps its 7,769
employees form friendships and get to know each other at
events ranging from cooking classes to ski trips, skating
and theatre nights. Programs like these are a win-win for
everyone: they keep staff closely connected to their
employer, plus new employees are able to form social
connections with colleagues at all levels of seniority.
This morning, our editors released ‘reasons for
selection’ describing these programs in more detail and
explaining why each of this year’s winners was chosen. I
encourage you to read these reasons on the competition
homepage at: www.canadastop100.com/alberta. If your
organization would like to be considered for next year’s
competition, I encourage you to get in touch with our
editors at ct100@mediacorp.ca
