Fig leverages diversity to fuel innovation and growth
D
espite being early
in her career, Tina
Amadou Sabi isn’t
afraid to share
her ideas with
colleagues, managers and even the
CEO. It’s one of the reasons she
enjoys working at Fig Financial
Inc. — her fresh ideas and
different perspectives are not only
well received, but they’re also
encouraged.
“At Fig, collaboration is key; no
one works alone in a silo,” says
Amadou Sabi, legal and compliance counsel for the digital personal loan provider. “One of Fig’s
core values is that diversity makes
us better, and I can vouch for that.
Every day, I feel encouraged to
bring my whole self to work — not
just with my team, but across the
company.”
As a young, Black female lawyer
at a tech startup, Amadou Sabi
brings a perspective shaped by her
experiences. Working alongside
colleagues of varied racial and
gender identities, she thrives in a
culture that values and encourages
fresh ideas. Under CEO François
Côté’s leadership, the company’s
strong action bias ensures ideas
are judged on merit, not origin
— empowering people from all
backgrounds to excel, driving innovation, engagement and growth.
“Our hiring and interview process allows us to meet a variety of
candidates, which has helped us
build a team with diverse perspectives to fuel creativity, innovation
and progress,” says Côté.
Based in both Montréal and
Toronto, Fig is a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Fairstone Bank of
Canada, developed in collaboration with Koru, a venture studio
owned by the Ontario Teachers’
Pension Plan.
Since launching in March 2023,
Fig’s mission has been clear: empower Canadians facing financial
challenges to make smart decisions by offering accessible, efficient and transparent credit. Fig’s
online portal simplifies borrowing
with loan approvals in as little as
10 seconds and enables borrowers
to complete applications in under
10 minutes — faster than the days
or weeks it takes at traditional
banks, says Côté.
When Amadou Sabi heard
about Fig, she immediately
wanted to be part of it, knowing
she could put her new law degree
to good use. While in school, she
developed an interest in the intersection between law, technology
and finance. Since joining in July
2023, she has helped Fig grow,
while enjoying the opportunities
to challenge herself and solve
problems.
One of Fig’s core values is that
diversity makes us better and I
can personally vouch for that.
Every day, I feel encouraged to
bring my whole self to work
— not just with my team, but
across the company.

“What I love about Fig is that
we actually get stuff done,” she
says. “One of our core values is ‘get
stuff done,’ which I connect with.
It speaks to our focus on action.
They’re not just words — it helps
us reach our goals.”
Fig is also helping Amadou Sabi
reach her career goals. She is part
of a company-wide mentorship
program and is pursuing her Juris

outside Québec, with Fig covering
her tuition. “I have a work-life
