ALBERTA’S TOP EMPLOYERS
For people at ATCO Energy, it’s everyone’s culture
O
ne of the best things
for Lindsey Hagen
about landing a job
at ATCO Energy
Ltd. was that she felt
like she was welcomed through
the front door before she even
physically walked into the office.
“I received an email before I
even started with all the organizational details I needed and a
fun welcome video from my team
where they each told me their
favourite podcast, book or movie
that they recently enjoyed,” says
Hagen, director of marketing.
“I’ve never seen anything
like that in my 18 years in the
workforce. It was pretty amazing,
starting even before your first day.”
We have a lot of fun
and we work really hard. We strive for
excellence, but that’s
what makes it such a
great ride.

ATCO Energy is headquartered
in Calgary and provides natural
gas and electricity to homes and
businesses in Alberta. It is part
of the larger ATCO group, which
offers engineering, logistics, and
energy solutions. Across Alberta,
ATCO employs diverse professionals, from engineers and operators,
to analysts and managers.
For Hagen, every day brings new
challenges, but she can meet them
because of the company’s unique

collaborative workplace dynamic.
“We’ve created a culture that is
open door and transparent,” she
says. “When we don’t get it right,
we hear about it. But that’s good,
because if you don’t hear about it,
your workforce isn’t engaged. And
I can tell you, team members at
ATCO Energy are engaged.”
Nicole Murray, champion
of employee experience and
culture, is responsible for guiding
this unique culture. She says
communication, shared values
and collaboration are the key
ingredients to building culture.
“We’ve cultivated an exceptional
workplace because all of our programming is rooted in our values,
with our people at the heart of it
all,” says Murray.
“We’re constantly listening,
learning and evolving based on
what our employees are telling
us about their work experience.
It’s not my culture, it’s everyone’s
culture.”
Employees enjoy a hybrid work
model, which supports work-life
balance. Education and training support help guide career
advancement. ATCO Energy
also takes the time to recognize
employee excellence with the
All-Stars recognition program,
where co-workers get to nominate
each other for a job well done.
Each quarter, the winner of the
All-Stars program receives a $500
prize.
Murray says the top executives
also take part in the co-created
corporate culture.
“Our president, Neeraj Ghai,
has started this program where
you can book a coffee and have a
muffin with him. We call it muffin
and mind share. It’s fun and he’s
happy to talk about anything from
a business standpoint to your
latest perspective on the Blue
Jays,” she says.
The spirit of camaraderie goes
beyond the workplace, with
numerous social events and
charitable activities. Hagen says it
creates a sense of shared mission.
