CIBC builds its culture with caring and innovation
M
ichelle Morris
started her career
at CIBC 11 years
ago as a contingent
employee, working
on a Salesforce initiative for the
bank’s Capital Markets division.
Now senior director of corporate,
investment and global transaction
banking technology, CIBC Capital
Markets, Morris credits the bank’s
innovative culture and leadership
training programs for her career
development.
“CIBC does a great job of
investing in human capital,” she
says. “I’ve had the opportunity to
work on a number of initiatives
across different areas of the bank,
and they’ve allowed me to build
relationships, take myself out of my
comfort zone and develop my skill
set.”
Pallavi Tripathi, senior vicepresident and chief information
officer, CIBC Capital Markets
Technology, says the bank’s
employee growth initiatives include
a range of coaching, mentoring
and training programs, many of
which she has participated in
herself. “The coaching program
is available to leaders at different
levels, and mentorships are offered
to everyone, from co-op students
up,” she says. “I’ve twice been given
coaches, and they’ve significantly
influenced my leadership style.”
Morris recently completed CIBC’s
Accelerate Your Development
program, which focuses on
expanding participants’ leadership
capabilities. “You’re assigned a
mentor and have opportunities to
participate in meetings with the
global leadership team,” she says.
“I found it very rewarding. You can
interact with leaders several levels
above you, and it really does help
you grow and transition to more
senior leadership roles.”
Tripathi points to CIBC’s culture
of care, innovation and learning as
essential to employee satisfaction
and engagement. The culture of
care includes opportunities for
employees to give back to the
community; Tripathi and her
team spent time sorting food at
a homeless shelter and building
furniture for the Furniture Bank.
“Some pieces we had to assemble,
some we had to fix,” she says. “We
got our hands dirty and actually
built furniture.”
CIBC does a great job
of investing in human
capital.

As co-chair of the Inclusion

inclusion and diversity in the
workplace, starting with co-op
hiring. “We hold information
sessions with leaders and university
partners to build awareness about
women in engineering and find
ways to attract women in those
areas,” she says.
Morris is also part of that
committee. “It really highlights

everyone brings value and is an

I appreciate what it’s trying to
