EO Paul Mitchell is
proud of how Weston

has grown from 40
to 80 employees, all
while improving benefits and
company culture.
The Vaughan- and Torontobased planning and urban design
company recently added an RRSP
matching program and provides
an annual $1,000 mental health
practitioner benefit, as well as 80
per cent maternity leave top-up
pay for 16 weeks.
We have our core values, which include
integrity, teamwork,
engagement, client
focus and employee
development. Recruiting and supporting the
best talent is important
for Weston and for our

But Mitchell says economic
uncertainty is making it a
challenging time for the building
and development industry.
“We are in uncertain times.
There is nothing we can do about
that. But we can provide clarity
and let employees know what we

through it and it’s going well.”
Nicholas Klymciw, planner,
appreciates the frank
communication from leadership.
“We keep up our weekly team
meetings, and there are regular
updates right from the top
executives. For example, we just
had an all-staff meeting with a
presentation about how we’re
navigating this challenging time,”
he says.
Mitchell says it is also important
for the company to maintain
its benefits and other programs
for employees. “We are finding
other ways to cut costs — for
example, scaling back on travel
to conferences or adjusting our
approach to training,” he says. The
company is ensuring employees
still have skills development
opportunities, with the human
resources department creating
internal programs.
The company also recently
created a talent map that outlines
the skills and goals required for
advancement, tailored to specific
roles, to help employees along
their career development path.
“We have our core values, which

Recruiting and supporting the

Klymciw values this support.
“They will bring in experts from
our industry to our office to share
their insights and give an overview
of the work they do, so we’re able
to see a broader picture of our
industry,” he says. “There are also
a lot of opportunities to network
at outside events beyond work,
which is all terrific.
“There’s also quite a supportive
system in place for us to develop
our accreditation as professional
planners. The senior staff are all
