“Do you know that almost 80 per
cent of the calls that we go to are
not even foundationally rooted in
crime? The majority are rooted in
social issues.”
A key area of innovation may be
in whom Peel recruits among its
Dispatchers at Peel Regional Police work behind the scenes to ensure the well-being of its communities.
2,500 sworn officers and 1,000 civilians. Since Ontario abandoned
the requirement of a post-secondary education for police, the force
looks for a wide range of people,
from those with educational expertise, like Brefo, to people with a
lot of lived experience to offer. “A
Peel Regional Police officer is not
born. They’re made,” says Dapat.
“Every single one of them has the
highest level of training that we
would give to a front-line officer.”
Brefo did considerable formal
training before being sworn in in
August 2025. Now, she is enjoying
the working environment at Peel
Police. “It’s a very warm community, and it honestly just feels
like everyone is family,” she says.
“Everyone treats you like a friend.”
