Olympus Canada develops talent from within
A
s someone just
starting out,
Showmiya Sivaruban
appreciates that her
employer, Olympus
Canada Inc., provides her with the
tools she needs to follow a clear
path ahead in her career.
Two years after graduating
with a science degree from the
University of Toronto, she joined
the company as a marketing
associate. Encouraged by the
leadership team, she applied for a
different, more challenging position. Last June — with two years
of experience at Olympus — she
became a business process analyst,
where she now looks to lead and
co-ordinate business-driven
projects for the sales and
marketing teams.
The company invests a
lot in their employees,
and they truly want
them to succeed.

“I see my new role as a stepping
stone to apply my skills as a
marketing associate on a broader
level,” she says. “The learning
never stops, and that’s what I like
about this new role. There is always support around at Olympus
if I need it.”
Based in Richmond Hill,
Olympus Canada is part of a
global company that specializes in
providing and servicing medical
technologies, including minimally

diagnostic equipment.
Aside from the leadership
and decision-making training
Sivaruban has received, she also
regularly takes part in the women’s
employee resource group. One of
several of its kind at Olympus, the
resource groups bring together
team members with shared
experiences and perspectives to
foster collaboration, mentorship
and professional growth. She is
inspired by the guests who speak
about their Olympus careers and
give advice on networking and
mentorship.
“As someone early in her career,
I find it really beneficial,” she says.
Sivaruban also takes advantage
of presentations Olympus offers
on the specialized products it sells.
She attends in-person demonstration sessions to ask questions
about devices like an electrosurgical instrument.
“These products are giving
people a second chance at life,”
she says.
Like all employees at Olympus,
Sivaruban is encouraged to think
of the patient first in all her
work-related decision making.
Patient focus is one of the company’s strong core values. The others
include integrity, innovation,
impact and empathy.
“I align with the values at
Olympus,” she says. “It makes me
feel more fulfilled at work.”
Rahool Jain was eager to find
a stable company with values
that inspired him after 12 years
of experience as a chartered
professional accountant in the
Canadian financial industry.
During his interview process with
Olympus, the longevity of not only
the company but the employees
inspired him.
“I love that the company has
been around for more than 100
years,” says Jain, who joined last
May as senior manager, finance.
“Everyone who interviewed me
had been with the company for
at least 10 to 12 years. This stood
out to me because in the financial
industry there is a lot of turnover.
I want that kind of belonging in a
company that I work for.”
